Mrs Myers was mugged in Quarry Road, Gomersal, last Friday and died later in hospital.

Holstead was charged with robbing her of a brown handbag containing £15.90 in cash, a pair of spectacles, an umbrella, two purses and credit cards, together worth £65.90p.

On the same day, he is alleged to have robbed Elanna Herod of a grey handbag containing a mobile phone, satellite navigation system and cash together worth £500.

Holstead, who appeared in court wearing a cream striped T-shirt, was remanded in custody to attend Leeds Crown Court for a preliminary hearing on June 28.

He waved an arm at relatives and friends in the public gallery as he left the dock.
