Heartache for family over crash children

Alin Mosa died and his six-year-old brother Ara and 17-month-old sister Arda were seriously injured when the family’s car collided with a lorry near Folkestone in Kent on Friday, August 29.

The family had just returned from a holiday and were on their way home when the tragedy occurred.

Kent Police confirmed last week that Ara and Arda remained in a critical condition at a London hospital.

However now the Mosas face the heartbreaking prospect of breaking the news of Alin’s death to his younger brother.

The collision happened at around 9.30am on August 29 as the family were travelling home from the ferry port following a holiday in Europe and Kurdistan in northern Iraq.

The children’s father Abdulwaid Mosa, 42, and mother Huzan Mosa, 30, were less seriously injured and were said to be in a stable and improving condition.

Family friend Nazmi Aziz, 41, of Ireland Wood, Leeds, said Alin and Ara were extremely close brothers and that the news would be devastating.

Mr Aziz added: “They were always together, like twins. As well as being brothers, they were really close friends.

“It will be really hard to tell him (Ara) what has happened.

“He doesn’t know yet, he hasn’t woken up yet.

“It is really sad.”

Paying tribute to Alin Mosa, father-of-two Mr Aziz said; “Alin was a really nice boy.

“He was intelligent and older than his age.

“He was friendly with all the children.”

Mr Aziz also paid tribute to the Kurdish community in Leeds, who he said had rallied to support the stricken family, who live in the Headingley area of Leeds.

He said around 30 families have travelled from Leeds to visit the Mosa family in hospital in London.

Mr Aziz, who has also visited the family in hospital, said the children’s father Abdulwaid Mosa is from Kurdistan in norther Iraq and has lived in Leeds for 13 years.

Arian Doski, 38, of Seacroft, has also visited the Mosa family in hospital.

Mr Doski said: “They are very nice people.

“They are very quiet.

“He (Mr Mosa) was always busy with his family.”

The accident happened on the A20 near Saltwood in the Hythe area of Kent when the family’s grey Kia Soul collided with a black DAF lorry.

Members of the public have placed flowers by the roadside at the scene of the tragedy.

An inquest into Alin Mosa’s death was due to be opened in Kent last Wednesday, but was adjourned until this Wednesday.

Meanwhile police in Kent are appealing for witnesses to the fatal accident to come forward.

Investigating officer Pc Dawn Smith, of Kent Police’s serious collision investigation unit, said her team was still working hard to piece together exactly what had led to the accident.

“This was clearly a tragic incident and we continue to work to ensure we have the full picture of the circumstances that led to the collision.”

It is also now understood that police have spoken to the woman driver of a blue vehicle who had stopped at the scene.

Officers had previously appealed for the woman, who got out of her car to assist with traffic control, to get in touch.
