Investigation launched into death of inmate at Wealstun Prison, Leeds

An investigation has been launched into the death of an inmate at a prison in Leeds.

Stephen Davison, 27, was found dead in his cell at HMP Wealstun, in Thorp Arch, Wetherby, on Wednesday.

A Prison Service spokesman said: “HMP Wealstun prisoner Stephen Davison was found unresponsive in his cell at approximately 8.55am on July 8. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

“As with all deaths in custody there will be an investigation by the independent Prisons and Probation Ombudsman.”

Wealstun is a category C prison, meaning prisoners cannot be trusted in open conditions but are considered unlikely to try to escape.
