Jail for drug-smuggling lorry driver

A GERMAN lorry driver was starting a three-year jail sentence today after attempting to smuggle £400,000 of ‘skunk’ cannabis into the UK.

Dominic Bilgin, 35, at first claimed he was carrying empty pallets to officers who stopped him as he drove off the Rotterdam ferry which had docked in Hull last September 27.

But there were doubts over the paperwork and his responses which prompted a thorough search which revealed six large black holdalls at the back of the trailer containing the drugs.

During interviews, Bilgin, from Osnabruck, claimed he played no part in loading the pallets and holdalls into the trailer in Holland, and denied the charge of importing a Class B drug into the United Kingdom.

However, he subsequently pleaded guilty to being knowingly concerned with importing the drugs. Yesterday he was jailed for three years and four months at Hull Crown Court.

Kevin Parsons, Assistant Director for Border Force, said: “This is a sizeable seizure of a harmful and addictive drug and I would like to pay tribute to the vigilance and hard work of the officers involved.”
