The 42-year-old, who used to live in Beeston, was branded a “brutal and controlling bully” by a judge after he left both his victims scarred following the attacks last year.

Bradford Crown Court heard how the man, who cannot be named to protect the identity of teenage daughter, struck her across the back and buttocks with a length of thorny stem from a hedge after she had confessed to eating the last piece of cake.

Prosecutor Richard Gioserano told the court how the father dragged his daughter into her bedroom where he told her to remove her dressing gown before repeatedly hitting her with the “stick”.

The girl, believed to be aged 17 at the time, was wearing a tee-shirt and jogging bottoms and Mr Gioserano said she estimated that she was hit as many as 15 times despite her begging her father to stop.

“She was cut and bleeding,” said Mr Gioserano.

“There were imprints on her back and buttocks from the stick. She was left bruised and actually with some chunks of skin removed from her back.”

Mr Gioserano said the teenager, who left home to start university after the attack, had been left with scars.

A few weeks after that attack the defendant, who had no previous convictions for violence, had an argument with his wife and during the row he picked up a pan of boiling water and spaghetti and threw it at her.

The court heard that the woman suffered burns to her back and neck and had also been left scarred.

When the father was quizzed about the in incidents last summer he denied assaulting his wife and claimed that he had merely been disciplining his daughter using “a twig”.

The defendant eventually pleaded guilty to the assault on his daughter and was convicted by a jury of assaulting his wife.

Judge Jonathan Rose said the father-of-three was “brutal and controlling bully” and the two assaults were a culmination of his behaviour.

“These two incidents are dreadful examples of your willingness to use significant violence,” the judge said.

He said the teenager had done nothing more than eat the last piece of cake and that warranted at worst an admonishment or a telling off.

The judge said the father had armed himself with the thorny stick and had subjected the girl to a sustained and prolonged beating.

Judge Rose said the second assault was an horrific piece of violence and it was a miracle that the woman had managed to turn her face away and avoid more extensive injuries.

The father was sentenced to 18 months in prison for the attack on his daughter with an extra 21 months in jail for the assault on his wife.

In addition to the 39-month sentence Judge Rose also imposed a restraining order which bans the defendant from contacting his wife and teenage daughter for the next 10 years
