They were woken at 4.25am by banging on the bedroom window.

Police were called but Hutton managed to smash his way into the house on the ground floor.

The adults and the children gathered together in a bedroom and tried to block the door but Hutton kicked his way into the room.

Hutton said to the woman: "You said you would not bring another man in to my daughter's life.

"You better watch your back. You are going to get it."

Hutton, of Wesley Street, Wakefield, pleaded guilty to breaching a restraining order, possession of a bladed article, two counts of common assault, two of criminal damage, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and affray.

Richard Canning, mitigating, said Hutton had struggled with mental health problems.

Mr Canning said his client had been seeing a psychiatrist while on remand in custody and had been diagnosed with a personality disorder.

He said: "He wants to change his life. He doesn't want to be in and out of prison. If he offends in this way again, longer sentences will follow."
