Keighley Pc faces racism probe after arresting assault victim’s dad

THE police watchdog is investigating an allegation of racism after a 38-year-old man in Keighley claimed an officer used racist language about another man during his arrest.

The West Yorkshire Police officer made a racist comment about a man who allegedly assaulted the 38-year-old’s teenage daughter, it is claimed.

The father attended the scene of the alleged assault on his 15-year-old daughter after receiving a phone call from the police.

After he arrived, the officer in question allegedly made a racist comment about the alleged attacker.

He then arrested the 38-year-old father on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly. The father also claims the officer used excessive force, including using CS spray, when arresting him.

The incident occurred in Dalton Road, Keighley, on April 28.

A police spokesman said the alleged attacker had been arrested and bailed.

West Yorkshire Police referred the complaint to the Independent Police Complaints Commission on May 2. The IPCC has decided to manage an investigation by West Yorkshire Police’s Professional Standards Department.

IPCC Commissioner Nicholas Long said: “Our role in managing this investigation is to provide direction, control and independent oversight.

“The investigation will look at all the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the telephone contact with the man, the alleged racist remark and the decision to arrest and subsequent use of force.”
