Killer driver faces extradition from Cyprus

A KILLER driver who fled to northern Cyprus six years ago is facing extradition to the UK after handing himself in to the authorities.

West Midlands Police said officers were en route to the Mediterranean island after Wayne Smith and his partner, Julie Anne Skelding, were detained by police last week in connection with offences committed in 2005.

The couple had been sought as part of Operation Zygos, a campaign launched by Crimestoppers, the Serious Organised Crime Agency and Cyprus Police to track down fugitives wanted for offences committed in Britain.

Smith, 38, was convicted of causing death by dangerous driving following an incident in Bordesley Green, Birmingham, in 2005 in which a 22-year-old man was killed. The victim was hit by one car and then struck by a second vehicle driven by Smith, then of Billesley, Birmingham. He fled the scene and was convicted in his absence at the city’s Crown Court. Skelding, 36, was convicted of perverting the course of justice after she gave a false statement to police concerning the incident.
