Police were called at 6.30am to the Holt Road store after the break-in was discovered by staff.

Rumours that a staff member had been injured in the incident were untrue.

Det Insp Andy Welbourn, of Leeds District CID, said the store was shut while the scene was forensically examined but “everything was being done to minimise disruption to the business and its customers”.

“We would like to hear from anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area overnight or who has any information that could assist the investigation, particularly if they know of anyone who suddenly has a lot of cash,” he added.

An Asda spokeswoman said the store reopened shortly before 1pm.

“We’re currently assisting police with their enquiries,” she added.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Leeds District CID at Elland Road via 101 or call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
