Leeds community in shock over murder of '˜Papi': Police in new appeal

Clifford Amoh, 29, dies on Saturday after being attacked at his home in the Gipton area of the city.

A gang of people was seen fleeing from the scene and across Harehills Cemetery and nearby playing fields.

Mr Amoh was taken to hospital but was pronounced dead a short time later. Police said he had suffered a head injury.

A 22-year-old man and a woman of 27 have been arrested on suspicion of murder and remain in custody.

They appeared at Leeds Magistrates’ Court today where warrants for further detention were granted to give officers extra time to continue questioning them.

Police today appealed for witnesses who saw people arriving or leaving the address in Coldcotes Crescent to come forward.

Det Chief Inspector Nicola Bryar of West Yorkshire Police said: “Although two people have been arrested and remain in custody, we are still working to establish the full circumstances surrounding Clifford’s murder, and the community has a vital role to play in that.

“It has been very clear from the large number of people visiting the scene to lay flowers and pay tribute, and from numerous comments on social media, that Clifford was a well-liked and popular man in this close-knit community. Many people will have known him by his nickname Papi.”

She added: “His family are understandably devastated to have lost him in such sudden and violent circumstances and we have specialist officers supporting them at what is clearly a very difficult time.

“I get a real sense that people are in disbelief that this has happened to someone who was so well-liked, and that people want to see those responsible brought to justice.”

Between six and ten people were seen running from the address and police believe others will know who was involved.

Ms Bryar added: “Those individuals were mainly believed to be black males, although one was described as white. They ran from Coldcotes Crescent and across Harehills Cemetery and the neighbouring playing fields.

“While we have spoken to a number of witnesses we would still like to hear from anyone who saw any part of the incident at the address or who saw the suspects running off. We would also like to hear from anyone who has any information about who was involved or who knows anything about the circumstances surrounding the murder.”
