Life for man who murdered baby son

A father who murdered his seven-week-old son when he was left alone with him for 20 minutes has been jailed for life.

Ian Hutchinson, 25, of Barnsley, must serve a minimum of 12 years for the murder of baby Kieron.

The baby suffered catastrophic brain damage after his mother Rebecca Hutchinson and grandmother Georgina Hutchinson went to the supermarket on September 3 last year.

The trial at Sheffield Crown Court heard that Hutchinson may have inflicted the fatal injuries out of frustration because he did not have everything he needed to change his son’s nappy.

At his sentencing yesterday, Mr Justice MacDuff told Hutchinson: “You have been convicted, on overwhelming evidence, of the murder of your baby son, seven-weeks-old and committed to your sole care.

“For the short time he was alone with you, he was wholly and solely reliant upon you. It is clear to me that because he cried or required changing, or perhaps because of frustration felt by you at having no baby wipes readily to hand, you lost control of yourself and so violently brought his head into contact with some hard surface that you caused him the catastrophic injuries from which he died.”

Baby Kieron suffered bleeding eyes and a seven-and-a-half centimetre skull fracture – injuries which must have been caused by an impact with a hard object and violent shaking.
