A YOUNG driver from Leeds has been killed in a head-on crash with a lorry.

The 19-year-old, who has not yet been named, was in a Renault Clio that was involved in a collision with a white, Bulgarian-registered HGV near Fairburn on Saturday.

The vehicles were travelling in opposite directions on the A1246 between Fairburn and the junction with the A63 near the Selby Fork Hotel when the incident happened at about 2.45pm.

The 19-year-old, who was the only person in the car, died at the scene. The 56-year-old Bulgarian lorry driver was taken to Pinderfields hospital with minor injuries.

The road was closed for more than eight hours while investigators examined the scene.

North Yorkshire Police are appealing for witnesses, especially the driver of a pale or white car seen in the area at the time. A spokesman said: “Officers would like to speak to the occupant as they may be a vital witness who could have information which could assist the investigation.

Officers would also like to hear from anyone else who was travelling along the same stretch of road in either direction and saw either vehicle prior to the crash, or who witnessed the actual collision.”
