One woman, 32, was found dead at the address in Phoenix Boulevard, close to the National Railway Museum, after the incident at 8pm on Sunday, while a 23-year-old woman suffered serious injuries.

The injured woman was taken by ambulance to York District Hospital and remains in a stable condition, North Yorkshire Police said last night. A 25-year-old man was arrested at an address at Popes Head Court, in the Peter Lane area, at 2.20am yesterday in connection with the investigation and remains in police custody for questioning.

Detective Superintendent Dai Malyn, of North Yorkshire Police’s Major Crime Unit, said: “I believe that the suspect we have in custody was known to at least one of the victims and that this was an isolated incident. I can therefore reassure the people of York that there is no threat to their safety.

“However, I fully appreciate that the incident has caused a great deal of upset and concern in the local community which is why we have put in place visible police patrols in the area.

“Both the scene of the suspected murder on Phoenix Boulevard and the arrest at Popes Head Court have been cordoned off to allow for police examinations.

“I thank residents for their continued understanding and patience while these very important enquiries are conducted.”

Det Supt Malyn is appealing for people to come forward to assist the investigation into the murder of the 32-year-old, who is thought to be from the local area, and the attempted murder.

He said: “Officers from the Major Crime Unit are working to establish the sequence of events which led up to the suspected murder. We need to establish the time it occurred and the movements of the suspect afterwards.

“If you were in the area prior to the incident being reported to the police and witnessed or heard a disturbance, I urge you to get in touch straight away.

“I am particularly keen to speak to anyone who may have seen a man matching the suspect’s description leaving the scene. He is described as a white, over 6ft tall, with an athletic build and short blond hair.”
