Man bailed after rape arrest in Sheffield student death investigation

A man arrested as part of the investigation into the death of Sheffield student Caroline Everest has been released on bail.

The 31-year-old was detained yesterday on suspicion of rape following the discovery of Miss Everest’s body in a river at the bottom of Ecclesall Road in the city on Tuesday morning.

Police today said the cause of the 18-year-old’s death had still to be determined.

Sheffield Hallam University student Miss Everest was reported missing after leaving the Corporation nightclub in Sheffield city centre in the early hours of Sunday.

The senior investigating officer on the case, Det Chief Insp Victoria Short, said: “I would like to say thank you on behalf of Caroline’s family and South Yorkshire Police to the overwhelming public response we have had throughout the investigation so far.

“This is an incredibly difficult time for Caroline’s family and I would ask that the media respect their privacy.

“The investigation is still ongoing and we are urging anyone who saw Caroline on the night she disappeared to come forward.

“Her picture has been widely circulated and if you saw her on that night please get in touch.

“Any information, no matter how small, could help us piece together her final steps to bring some closure to her family.”

Anyone with information is asked to call South Yorkshire Police via the force’s 101 number, quoting incident reference 998 of November 22.
