Police have also named the victim of Thursday afternoon’s attack as 38-year-old Michaela Heaton.

Officers were called to the Leeds Liverpool Canal towpath area off Canal Road, Armley, at around 4.30pm.

Ms Heaton was found with serious head injuries and taken to Leeds General Infirmary. She was pronounced dead a short time afterwards.

Speaking on Saturday, DCI Belton said: “We are trying to trace any family of Michaela and I would urge any relatives to come forward. There has also been speculation that she was pregnant. Although she may have given the impression she was, she was not.”

Floral tributes had yesterday been laid at the scene of the attack.
