Police have charged a 47-year-old with wounding over the incident on Handsworth Grange Road, Handsworth, on Sunday night.

A 24-year-old was left in a critical condition after the shooting, which police initially said may have stemmed from the ‘accidental discharge of an air rifle’.

A second man, aged 23, who was also arrested over the incident has been released without charge.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “Police are investigating the circumstances of an alleged wounding, and have recovered an air rifle.

“Emergency services were called just after 10.20pm on Sunday to find a man with a life-threatening head injury.”

An armed police officer on duty in Sheffield on the night posted details on Twitter.

He tweeted: “Incident in Sheffield. Possible accidental discharge of air rifle. Male injured and needing hospital treatment..”

Yesterday a police car was parked outside the house where the shooting took place, and officers were carrying out door-to-door inquiries among neighbours.

South Yorkshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner Shaun Wright said air weapons were legal – but lethal: “Even though air weapons are legally owned, this type of incident demonstrates they are dangerous and need to be treated with great respect. My sympathies are with the family of the man in hospital.

“Anyone using a weapon in a way that could endanger the public should be reported to the police immediately.”

Anyone with information should contact South Yorkshire Police on 101 quoting incident 1,246 of May 5 or Crimestoppers 0800 555111.
