Man held for murder after woman found in Sheffield street

A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the death of a pensioner found apparently collapsed in the street.

South Yorkshire Police said they were called to Worrall Road, in the Hillsborough area of Sheffield, after an 80-year-old woman was found in the street. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers said the woman’s death was “unexplained” but later said they had arrested a 55-year-old man on suspicion of murder.

A spokesman said: “A 55-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the death of a woman in Sheffield today.

“Emergency services were called at around 9.30am this morning to reports of an 80-year-old woman who appeared to have collapsed in Worrall Road, in the Hillsborough area.

“The woman was subsequently pronounced dead at the scene.

“Worrall Road was closed while police carried out enquiries. The road has since been reopened but a small cordon will remain in place around the scene.”

He said the arrested man remains in custody.

Formal identification of the woman and a post-mortem examination have yet to take place, he said.
