The fire broke out on the DFDS overnight service to Amsterdam in one of the cabins when it was about 30 miles off the Yorkshire coast.

Six people, including a pregnant passenger, were airlifted off the vessel after suffering the effects of smoke inhalation and the ferry was diverted back to North Shields. A 28-year-old man who was detained on suspicion of affray has been released on bail pending further inquires.
