Police later reported that there had been what they described as “small pockets of disorder” in Chapeltown but said officers were dealing with “isolated incidents”.

They insisted that any reports of disorder in the city centre were false.

A police spokesman said: “Police confirm that one vehicle was burnt out earlier on Chapeltown Road. This incident was short-lived and dealt with by the fire service.”

The force helicopter maintained a presence over the city into the early hours but denied that any riots similar to those in London had taken place
