Murder trial told of lunchtime stabbing

A Turkish man repeatedly stabbed his estranged girlfriend to death in the street in front of children and horrified lunchtime shoppers, a court has heard.

Father-of-two Erhan Mehmedov, 45, feared losing a court custody battle over their young son and went berserk, allegedly knifing 46-year-old Dimitrina Borisova through the heart.

Miss Borisova, who had previously been subjected to serious domestic violence at Mehmedov’s hands and had been granted a non-molestation order by the courts, died at the scene from 17 stab wounds outside a parade of shops at Gleadless, Sheffield.

Her former lover was arrested minutes later at a nearby bus-stop and told police: “I did it, I will tell you everything.”

Mehmedov admits manslaughter but denies murder claiming he lost his self-control following taunting from Miss Borisova, a former Bulgarian accountant.

But Graham Reeds QC, prosecuting, told Sheffield Crown Court: “The emerging picture is of a surprise attack on Dimitrina Borisova deliberately executed using a large knife culminating in the defendant purposely stabbing her in the chest and torso, moreover stabbing her as she lay motionless on the pavement.

“It was a calculated, deliberate and relentless attack carried out with an obvious intention to kill her.”

A young girl who saw the chilling attack from across the road said in a videolink interview played to the jury she initially looked away as Mehmedov walked towards his victim on February 21 this year. “

She screamed and got away,” she said. “The second time he got her and stabbed her five times and I saw it.”

The attack in Blackstock Road was so fierce the handle of the kitchen knife broke off.

Miss Borisova had been due to hand over their son at the shops for an access visit when the attack took place. The trial continues.
