'˜Negative associations' with child abuse scandal prompt re-brand for Sheffield Predators

South Yorkshire American football team Sheffield Predators are looking for a new name due to the 'negative associations' with its current moniker and child abuse scandals in the region.

The team, which was founded in 2008 and is among the country’s top 12 American football team, is calling on the public to suggest a new name, and is seeking support from the city’s sporting community in meeting the “significant” cost of re-branding.

“The name ‘Predators’ no longer sits comfortably with the club’s stated aims of developing links with the local community, including its schools, colleges and universities” said the general manager Toby Chesters. “We need to avoid any negative associations which the current name, unfortunately, is attracting. Our new name, when chosen, will help us to develop the club progressively in the future, both in South Yorkshire and beyond.”
