A 22-year-old man was reportedly chased by two men in Wellgate, near to the William Fry pub, while he was getting into a taxi with friends at around 12.40am on Sunday, August 23.

Extensive enquiries have been carried out since the incident and detectives are releasing a CCTV image of a man they believe holds vital information.

Sergeant Denis Plaistow from Rotherham said: “We are grateful for the public’s continued support as we carry out our enquiries into this incident and would like to reassure the community that we are taking this incredibly seriously.

We know that images have previously been shared on social media but we must be sure that our investigation is not jeopardised by releasing certain information too soon, which is why we are only releasing further details now.

“We believe the man pictured could help us with our enquiries and we’d like to hear from him directly or from anyone who may know who he is.”

A 17-year-old man remains on police bail after being arrested on suspicion of affray last month.

Sgt Plaistow added: “Our officers have carried out a comprehensive investigation so far and there is some suggestion that there was an altercation near to the William Fry pub in Wellgate prior to the reported affray, which may or may not be linked.

“I’d therefore like to hear from anyone who may have seen the earlier incident or witnessed suspicious activity in that part of town.”
