Police appeal after pensioner death

Police have launched a murder investigation following the death of a pensioner in Pontefract on Wednesday.

West Yorkshire Police found the 71-year-old in the city centre at 11.40pm following reports that he had been assaulted.

The injured man was taken to Pontefract General Infirmary where he died of his injuries, police confirmed.

The force’s Homicide and Major Enquiry Team has launched a murder investigation into the circumstances of the pensioner’s death in the Beastfair area.

A 39-year-old man from Pontefract has since been arrested in connection with the assault and is currently detained in police custody pending enquiries.

Detective Superintendent David Pervin of the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, said: “Anyone who has any information about the incident is asked to contact Wood Street Help Desk on 01924 293258.”
