Police appeal over 12 year-old rape case in South Yorkshire

Police in South Yorkshire are asking for help in tracing a man wanted in connection with a reported rape and burglary in Doncaster, which occurred 12 years ago.

Detectives say they have issued the picture because they have “exhausted every other opportunity” to trace wanted man 43-year-old Soran Hayder Ali.

At around 3am on November 27 2005, it is reported that a woman was raped in her home in the Campsall area of Doncaster.

At the time of the incident, a press appeal for information was circulated but no arrests were ever made.

Police say that Ali is also wanted in connection with a suspected burglary at a property nearby, reported to police that same evening.

Det Sgt Michelle Freedman said: “Our enquiries have included regular checks with a wide range of agencies including UK Border Agency, Department for Work and Pensions, Her Majesty Revenue and Customs, various housing agencies and banks.

“Ali is originally from Iraq and we understand he is due for deportation back to Iraq, so there have been concerted efforts to find him over the last 12 years.

“We believe that he may be using an alternative name and is actively evading arrest. We have worked with police forces across the country to act on any new lines of enquiry, including executing warrants in Doncaster and in the West Midlands area to no avail.

“The photographs we have of Ali are not recent, so his appearance may be different to what is pictured, but I’d urge anyone with information about this man to get in touch with police.

“He is wanted in connection with a serious sexual crime and it is important we locate him.”

If you know him, or where he might be call South Yorkshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 559 of 20 January 2017 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
