Police called in after Rottweiler mauls Yorkshire Terrier to death

A TINY Yorkshire terrier has been killed by a Rottweiler in Newmillerdam Country Park, Wakefield.

Police have appealed for information about how the animals came into contact, and officers say they have been speaking with the parties involved.

Inspector Richard Clare of the Wakefield Rural NPT, said: “We are aware of this incident and have spoken at length with the involved parties including the owner of the deceased dog who is understandably very upset by what has taken place.

“Enquiries are ongoing and we are working with our partners in Wakefield Council to investigate this incident.

“I would ask anyone who was in the park at the time and saw this incident between these animals or saw both dogs shortly beforehand to contact us at the Wakefield Rural Neighbourhood Policing Team on the 101 non emergency number.”

Glynn Humphries, Service Director for Cleaner and Greener, said: “We are aware of this upsetting incident and taking it very seriously, working with the police to try and establish what happened on Saturday afternoon. Newmillerdam is a popular dog-walking location. We want people to use the park with confidence and we always urge all dog owners to act responsibly in all our parks and open spaces.
