Police drop sex attack inquiry at Sheffield infant school - but head stays away

POLICE today dramatically dropped an inquiry at an infant school in South Yorkshire which was closed last month after a member of staff was arrested on suspicion of a serious sexual assault on a young pupil.

The investigation caused uproar among parents at Greenlands Infant School in Darnall, Sheffield, and the school was closed for several days before the autumn half term holiday as a result.

Tonight South Yorkshire Police confirmed their investigation was complete and that investigators had found no evidence to pursue charges.

But Sheffield Council confirmed the member of staff remained suspended at present, though said the authority would be holding talks with the employee and his trade union representatives shortly to discuss his future.

It has also emerged that head teacher of the infant school, Sue Daniels, will remain away until the end of the current academic year, next July.

She was moved away from the school to other duties following a heated meeting with parents after the allegations emerged, with the council at the time stating that decision was taken for her welfare.

Now Pamela Smith, head of the junior school at Greenlands, will continue to take charge of both schools. Sheffield Council said the infants head teacher would be working on other duties for the rest of the year.

Police district commander in Shefield, Chief Superintendent Simon Torr, said: “From the moment the allegation was made at Greenlands Infant School, South Yorkshire Police and Sheffield City Council took immediate and appropriate action.

“South Yorkshire Police have taken great care to handle this matter seriously and with sensitivity.

“Our investigation was robust, thorough and we explored every possible avenue. We took into account information from other agencies which were involved.

“Our officers were available in school and several people came forward to discuss concerns, however no further child protection criminal investigations have been initiated.
