Police issue public appeal to find prime suspect in betting shop robbery

Police have named a suspect they are looking for over a robbery at a Leeds bookmakers.

At about 6pm On May 7 a man dressed in a suit, shirt and tie walked into William Hill on Kirkstall Road.

He passed a note to one of the betting shop’s counter staff claiming he had a weapon under a coat that he had draped over his arm and demanding money before escaping with several hundred pounds in cash.

Police have now issued a public appeal to find prime suspect Darren Cawood – but warned people not to approach him.

Detective Inspector Mark Swift, of Leeds District CID, said: “We urgently need to trace Darren Cawood who has been identifed from our enquiries as a suspect for this robbery. Despite extensive work to trace him we have so far been unable to establish his whereabouts.

“I would urge anyone who knows where he is to contact us. Members of the public who see him are advised not to approach him but to contact police immediately on 999.”

Cawood is from the Kirkstall area and has recently been seen in Armley, Beeston, Holbeck and Hunslet. He may also have links to the Durham area.

He is white, about 5ft 8ins tall and slim, with brown hair. Police say he may be wearing a suit and large glasses.
