Police issue warning after bogus callers try to enter homes in Yorkshire

There have been several reports of individuals in Acomb, York, pretending to be from Railway Housing Association and trying to gain access to people’s homes.

The bogus callers claimed they needed to enter the property to carry out 'works'.

North Yorkshire Police have confirmed with the housing association that these individuals are not official representatives or associated with the company.

Officers urged residents not to let these people into their homes under any circumstance, as official representatives will show ID cards.

Do’s and don’ts for cold callers and doorstep sellers, according to police

- Don’t open the door to anyone you don’t know. If you’re under any doubt, keep the door shut and don’t let anyone you don’t know inside your home.

- Do ask to always see the ID of anyone claiming to be from a legitimate company or organisation, and if you’re still unsure call their organisation to verify their identity.

- Do install a door chain or a peephole so that you can see who’s outside without opening your door.

- Do ask anyone who is making you uncomfortable to leave, and make sure you close your door.

- Do ring the police if you have any concerns about a doorstep caller.
