Police name man held over killing of 12 year-old boy

POLICE have named the Leeds man arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of 12 year-old Danny Gubbels as he sat alone in a caravan.

Alistair Desmond Weekes, 29, was seized at Armley Jail, Leeds, on Tuesday. He is currently serving a sentence for another violent offence.

Danny was shot in the city of Breda, in south Holland, in what police described as an “extremely violent” incident.

Weekes, said to be from north east Leeds, was arrested on a European Arrest Warrant by officers from West Yorkshire Police. His extradition has been requested in he his expected to appear before magistrates in London this week.

Armed police in Amsterdam also arrested a 24 year-old Englishman in relation to the killing, which took place on a trailer camp on July 14 last year.

Both men are suspected of murder or manslaughter.

Rounds from automatic weapons were fired and up to seven people were seen running away after the shooting. At least ten bullet holes were discovered in the caravan.

The killing sparked a public outcry and major media interest in the Netherlands after the youngster was shot as he sat alone in his home.
