Det Chf Insp Dave Stopford of South Yorkshire Police, who is leading the investigation, said: "Following Mr Bedford's death a murder enquiry was launched and a 32-year-old man from Barnsley was arrested yesterday morning. He remains in police custody at the present time.

"The family of Mr Bedford, who are receiving support from specially trained officers, have asked for their privacy to be respected at what is clearly a very distressing time.

"We are continuing to speak to a number of potential witnesses but I am very keen to hear from anyone who saw the assault take place and has yet to contact police. I would ask them to come forward and speak to detectives as their evidence could be vital."

Anyone with information is asked to contact police via:101, quoting incident number 26 from Monday 2 November.
