North Yorkshire Police said the force was at the scene of an 'ongoing incident' on Micklegate in York.

A cordon was put in place to allow emergency services including a negotiator to respond, police said.

Police told the public to avoid the area.

At around 1am, police provided an update and said a man had been arrested.

The 52-year-old was arrested on suspicion of affray and criminal damage.

The cordon has now been lifted and the road has reopened.

The full statement from North Yorkshire Police said: "We’re currently at the scene of an ongoing incident on Micklegate in York.

"A cordon is in place to allow to emergency services, including a police negotiator, to respond.

"Please avoid area until further notice.

"We will provide an update when the cordon has been lifted."

The later update confirmed: "Thank you for your patience whilst emergency services responded to the earlier incident on Micklegate.

"At around 1am, a 52 year-old man was arrested on suspicion of affray and criminal damage.

"The cordon has now been lifted and the road has reopened."
