Police ‘shocked’ as child carried in car footwell

A MOTORIST has been caught driving around with four children in his car, with none of them in child seats or wearing seat belts.

One, a four-year-old boy, was in the footwell behind the driver’s seat.

The 31-year-old VW Golf driver was stopped yesterday by West Yorkshire Police officers in Corporation Street in Dewsbury town centre. He is due before magistrates at a later date to face a charge of using a vehicle for an unsuitable purpose.

Of more than 100 drivers stopped, 13 were committing offences.

Four were given £60 fixed penalty fines after children under three were found not be in child seats.

Seven adults were fined for not wearing belts.

Inspector Jenny Thompson said it was “shocking and disturbing” to witness the risks being taken.

She added: “Obviously, when offences were spotted, we had to take action and while are pleased with the results, as the vast majority of the people stopped were obeying the law and considering the safety of their children, it was quite shocking and disturbing to see that some people are prepared to drive children around in their cars without fastening them in first.”
