Police use plastic bullets on ‘gunman’ in Leeds park

Police used plastic bullets to arrest a man in a Leeds park today on suspicion of carrying a gun.

Officers were called to Gotts Park, off Stanningley Road in Armley, at about 6.30am after reports of a man with a handgun.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “Officers promptly arrested a 20-year-old man.”

The police used baton rounds to arrest the man, who was taken to Leeds General Infirmary as a precaution but was not seriously injured.

Because of the use of force, the matter has now been referred to watchdog the Independent Police Complaints Commission to investigate.

It is the second referral to the IPCC by West Yorkshire in a week.

Last Thursday a man who brandished a knife at Leeds Crown Court suffered a dislocated shoulder after being knocked over by an unmarked police before being arrested.

Enquiries into this morning’s incident are ongoing.
