Pontefract: Carer jailed for abuse of woman, 89

A care assistant was jailed today for the “sickening” mistreatment of a vulnerable 89-year-old woman after the pensioner’s family recorded the abuse on a hidden camera.

Emma Bryan, 29, hit and shook Ivy Robinson, verbally abused her on several occasions and failed to give her proper doses of medicine at Oakfoss House Residential Care Home in Pontefract.

Bryan, along with her colleague Katherine Wallis, 45, also dragged Mrs Robinson across her bedroom floor which made her scream in pain before Wallis threatened her with violence.

The pensioner’s family captured the five days of abuse on a CCTV camera concealed in an alarm clock after they noticed Mrs Robinson was bruised and traumatised.

Bryan was sent to prison for four months and Wallis was given a 12-month community order for what the judge at Leeds Crown Court described as “unforgivable and unacceptable neglect and ill-treatment”.
