Primary teacher admits 40 years of sex offences

A former Halifax primary school teacher has admitted sex offences dating back 40 years.

Alan Birkby, of Ryburn Buildings, Sowerby Bridge, formally entered guilty pleas to a series of allegations of indecent assault and indecency with a child before a judge at Bradford Crown Court yesterday. The charges cover a period between January 1972 and January 1981 and involved a total of six male complainants then aged between seven and 11.

The 68-year-old was granted unconditional bail until his sentence hearing on May 4, but he will now have to register with the police as a sex offender.
