Prison term for warder who took drugs into jail

A PRISON officer who smuggled heroin and cannabis into jail for prisoners has been sent down for five-and-a-half years after he was caught “red handed” during a random search.

Married father-of-two Paul Boynton, 34, had previously succeeded in sneaking drugs into HMP Everthorpe near Brough, East Yorkshire, on one occasion before he made the failed attempt as he arrived for a night shift last October.

He was found carrying an orange bag containing heroin with a street value of £320, cannabis worth £450, and a mobile phone and charger he was also trying to smuggle in. Police also found £910 at his home which he admitted was the proceeds of crime.

Boynton claimed he had been pressured into the crime by inmates, and was looking for extra money because his family had debts of £26,000.

At an earlier hearing he admitted three charges of possession of drugs with intent to supply, two of conveying drugs into prison and one of acquiring or using criminal property.

Sentencing him at Hull Crown Court, Judge Michael Mettyear said: “This is particularly serious because of the position of trust you held and you above all should know the problems caused in prison by the introduction of contraband. Yet you put those concerns to one side and did what you did.

“It’s terribly sad to see a man like you facing sentence in the Crown Court.”
