Probe into Pc’s death now eight months old

AN investigation into the death of a police officer found hanged in the grounds of a school hours after being arrested over images found on a computer is yet to be completed, eight months on.

West Yorkshire Police officer Kevin Ellis was found in woods at Lofthouse in April. He was released from custody the previous evening but it is understood he never made it home to his family.

The matter was initially referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission but then sent back to West Yorkshire Police, who say their probe into the case is “ongoing”.

No coroner’s inquest into Mr Ellis’s death can be carried out until the police review is complete.

Chief Superintendent Dickie Whitehead of West Yorkshire Police said: “The matter is subject of an ongoing organisational review and a coroner’s inquest, neither of which are complete. As such we are unable to comment further at this time.”

It is understood Pc Ellis, of Whitwood, Castleford, was taken to Dewsbury police station for questioning on April 17 after being arrested on suspicion of possessing indecent images.

The opening of his inquest at Wakefield coroner’s court heard he was being driven to his parents’ house by another police officer when he asked to be dropped off nearby, saying he wanted to walk the rest of the way.

The inquest opening heard that police discovered Pc Ellis had not arrived at his parents’ home during a welfare check at around 9.30pm that night.
