Probe into police handling of calls about dead man

THE police watchdog is to investigate the way one of the region’s forces responded to calls expressing concern about the welfare of a man who was found dead the next day.

Michael Leddington-Lucas, 66, was found dead at his home in Beverley, East Yorkshire by police on September 24.

According to the Independent Police Complaints Commission, Humberside Police received calls on September 23 and 24 expressing concern for his welfare.

Following the second call, police went to Mr Leddington-Lucas’s home and found him dead.

The IPCC announced yesterday that it is investigating whether the initial call to Humberside Police was handled in line with the force’s policies and national guidelines. Investigators will look specifically at the actions and decision-making of the call handler, who has had a misconduct notice served on her.

The IPCC’s commissioner for Yorkshire, Kathryn Stone, said: “My thoughts are with those closest to Mr Leddington-Lucas following his sad death.

“This investigation will seek to determine whether the correct policies and procedures were followed when Humberside Police was first contacted and if the information gathered from the call should have been used to instigate welfare checks on Mr Leddington-Lucas.”
