Pubs in Scarborough and Whitby caught having lock-ins over the weekend

Two pubs in Scarborough and Whitby have been caught 'opening' behind closed doors, police have revealed.

Officers attended two premises in Scarborough and Whitby following reports from members of the public that breaches of coronavirus laws were taking place.

Pubs, restaurants and cafés are not allowed to open in the UK unless they offer takeaway, under current coronavirus guidelines.

On Friday night police officers attended a premises in Scarborough to find a group of people inside playing pool and partying, with disco lights and music in use with alcohol available.

Seven people were fined for breaching regulations.

At around 6pm on Saturday officers found another group of people inside a premises in Whitby drinking and watching rugby. Five people were fined.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: "Both premises have been reported to the relevant Licensing Departments and an investigation is ongoing.”
