References from ex-policewoman ‘genuine’

CHARACTER references supplied by an ex-police officer from Yorkshire who admitted fraud and misconduct are genuine, a judge said yesterday.

Last month Judge Simon Jack ordered police to examine testimonials put forward by Rachel Hewitt, 39, because they were in such stark contrast to her offences.

But as he adjourned Hewitt’s sentencing for a second time at Hull Crown Court, the judge said police had now reported back to him.

He said: “What she said was correct and the references were all genuine, so that is helpful for reasons I have discussed.”

Hewitt, of Ash Grove, South Elmsall, near Pontefract, claimed she had to miss work because her daughter needed chemotherapy and an operation to remove a tumour.

The former North Yorkshire Police officer, who pleaded guilty to fraud and misconduct in a public office at an earlier hearing, said “thank you” as she left the dock, after being granted bail and told the case would now be heard on July 30.
