North Yorkshire Police will share the site at Stonebridgegate with the North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Authority, whose base nearby is being demolished.

The current Ripon police station is said to be too large, in need of repair and expensive to maintain.

An agreement to sell the land was agreed last October, subject to planning permission, and since then the force’s estates team has been looking at relocation options in the town.

North Yorkshire Police will occupy around a third of the new building, which will contain dedicated police offices and shared spaces such as meeting rooms, reception area and staff welfare facilities.

Officers from Ripon will be joined by those from Boroughbridge, whose base is also due to be sold, at the new station.

They will move to Stonebridgegate mid-way through next year, initially occupying temporary buildings until the new facilities are completed in summer 2017.

According to the force, the cost of the project will be under £800,000 and the new building will allow North Yorkshire Police to save more than £120,000 per year. The total saving over the 30 year term of the agreement is estimated at more than £3.7 million.

Police commissioner Julia Mulligan said: “I am very pleased to give the green light to this proposal for a new building shared with NYFRA. Co-location with other public-sector partners is very much the way forward, as we look for ways to reduce our costs and improve our service.”
