Rise in policing precept to hit council tax bills

THE police and crime commissioner for North Yorkshire is planning a 1.99 per cent rise in the precept on council tax bills to pay for policing in the county.

Crime commissioners must keep any rises in their share of the bill below two per cent or hold a public referendum under Government rules.

The rise would increase bills on band D properties by £4.07 for the year.

The commissioner, Julia Mulligan, said: “These are extremely challenging times for police forces across the country.

“Like all public sector organisations, we need to maintain and improve services while reducing spending.

“Along with various other proposals – such as collaboration with partners and a review of senior staff – I am doing my best to ensure that North Yorkshire Police has the resources and police officers it needs to keep people safe.”
