Scarborough man charged with burglary at Wayne Rooney's mansion

A 24-year-old Scarborough man has appeared in court charged with the attempted burglary of Wayne Rooney's Cheshire home as the footballer played in his testimonial match at Old Trafford.

Robert Leslie McNamara appeared at South and East Cheshire Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday for the brief hearing.

He is charged with the attempted burglary of a dwelling with intent to steal on August 3.

The case was sent to Chester Crown Court and will next be heard on September 7.

McNamara, of Newby Farm Crescent, Scalby, Scarborough, dressed in a striped top and grey jogging bottoms, was granted conditional bail from magistrates.

The alarm at the Manchester United star’s £6 million property in Prestbury was reportedly triggered and police descended to conduct a full search of the area.

The Rooneys’ family home was targeted as the striker, his wife, Coleen, and their three sons, Kai, Klay and Kit, were at the charity tribute game against his first club, Everton.

Police said the incident happened at approximately 9.00pm on Wednesday August 3 at an address in the Chelford Road area of Prestbury.

McNamara was arrested on Tuesday over the bid to break in to the Cheshire mansion.
