School defends installing 112 CCTV cameras

A secondary school has defended the installation of 112 CCTV cameras, branded “over the top” by civil liberties groups.

The security system at Stoke Park School and Community Technology College in Coventry includes 33 cameras outside and 79 inside. The number was revealed after a request under the Freedom of Information Act by the Coventry Telegraph newspaper.

The school said the cameras were required to ensure pupil safety but Daniel Hamilton, of civil rights campaign group Big Brother Watch, described them as a “snooping” mechanism.

The school’s acting headteacher Marie Harrison said: “This has been one of a number of measures taken by the school in ensuring children’s safety and minimising damage in and around the site.”
