Selby: Body found at dam ‘not thought to be suspicious’ say police

Police have confirmed they are not treating the death of a man found dead in a canal as suspicious.

He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

Inquiries into his death continue, but a North Yorkshire Police spokesman said foul play is expected to be ruled out.

cause of death is currently unexplained officers do not believe there any suspicious circumstances.”

The area around Abbey Walk was cordoned off and officers remained at the scene of the discovery throughout Sunday while forensic examinations were carried out.

A formal identification has not yet taken place, and no cause of death has been established, but the man is thought to be from the Selby area and aged in his 20s.

He was dressed in a white top, maroon hooded top and trousers.

Det Insp Andrea Kell, who is leading the investigation, has appealed for information.

She said: “I need to speak to anyone who has seen the man in the Selby area during the evening of Saturday August 17, so that I can establish his movements prior to the discovery of his body.”

The coroner has been informed and an inquest will open in due course.
