Up to 20 firefighters were sent to deal with the fire which was first reported at around 8.30pm last night.

A fire service spokeswoman said three crews of firefighters and an incident support unit were sent to deal with the blaze which had started in a wooden shed and outbuildings on the site.

Police officers at the scene said they had been carrying out a routine patrol of Parkwood Springs when they discovered a small fire.

The fire service spokeswoman said they had received up to 130 calls about the blaze from members of the public.

Crews from Central and Rivelin stations were at the scene, along with police and paramedics.

Crews used hose reel jets to tackle the blaze.

One eye witness said: “I could see the flames shooting up into the sky from as far away as the Loxley Valley. There was a huge cloud of thick black smoke which could be seen across Sheffield. It looked like a ferocious blaze.”

The Ski Village has been targeted by arsonists on at least three occasions in recent months. It is not yet known how the latest fire started.
