Son may have died trying to save mother, 94

The son of a 94-year-old woman may have been trying to save his mother when flames engulfed their home, a coroner heard.

The body of Emilie Carter was found at the foot of her bed in Land Lane, off East Hill, Colchester, Essex, after fire swept through the property in April last year.

Francis Carter’s remains were found in the same room, suggesting that the 66-year-old was trying to rescue his mother, who was a heavy smoker and may have accidentally started the fire.

Coroner Caroline Beasley-Murray recorded a verdict of accidental death for both fire victims.
