Stolen van driver leads police on dramatic 84 mile chase from Leeds to Durham

A stolen van driver led police on a dramatic 84 mile chase from Leeds to Durham before being arrested in a field.

It happened at about 1.30am on Tuesday, September 1 after a white Ford Transit van was stolen from Kippax in Leeds.

The van was then spotted heading north on the A1 through North Yorkshire.

Traffic cops from North Yorkshire Police caught up with the van at about 1.55am as it crossed the Durham border.

However, the driver turned back down towards the North Yorkshire region.

Eventually, the van was stopped close to a petrol station at Skeeby, near Richmond.

The suspect then ran from the van but did not apply the handbrake,

The van subsequently rolled into one of the patrol cars.

A police dog was sent into a nearby field and the man was located .

He was arrested at 2.10am on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle and driving while disqualified.

He has been transferred into the custody of West Yorkshire Police and is being held for questioning.

The stolen van has been recovered and will be returned to its owner once forensic examinations have been completed.
