Studen given placement at forensic HQ

STUDENTS at universities across Yorkshire could be given placements at the region’s state-of-the-art police forensic science HQ as part of a new scheme.

Miranda Blackburn, a Forensic and Analytical Sciences student from the University of Huddersfield, will in September take up the first formal academic placement ever offered at the Sir Alec Jeffreys Building near Wakefield.

She was picked for the position with the Yorkshire and the Humber Regional Scientific Support Services after being pitted against dozens of entrants and going through a rigorous selection process.

For ten months of the academic year she will be working directly on research projects with staff in one of the most advanced scientific police units in the country.

It is part of a link-up between the unit, named after the pioneering inventor of DNA fingerprinting, and the university.

If the pilot goes well, officials hope the scheme will be expanded and opened up to all universities across Yorkshire and the Humber.
