Students sent home from Hull college after hoax email

Police said they were called to Wyke College on Bricknell Avenue in the city at 8.25am.

The college decided to close as a precuationary measure while police investigated.

Students who had already arrived at college were told to go home, while buses which were arriving were turned round.

However police now say they believe it to be one of a number of hoaxes sent out to schools and colleges worldwide.

Last month every school in LA was closed after a hoax. More than 600,000 children were ordered to stay home after the district’s superintendent received an email from a self-professed extremist Muslim jidahist threatening to attack schools with bombs and rifles.

The college’s principal Jay Trivedy said: “It was an email which indicated there was a security issue to students and staff.

“We made the decision to close the college and the police are in and investigations are ongoing.

“We are being told to wait while the police have more information.”

He added: “This is the first time we have had this, our systems have kicked in and we are very pleased how things have worked out this morning. It is completely calm. The students that came in calmly left ths site.”

One students said: “We were sat there doing some work and at 8.45am when a teacher told us there was a security alert.

“I was a bit frightened, but the teacher kept us quite calm.”

In a statement Humberside Police said: “Humberside Police take all threats seriously and will investigate the incident.

“As a precautionary measure the college have taken the decision to close the college while a fully investigation is carried out.

“It is not thought that there is a threat to the safety of the staff, students or public.

“However Humberside Police officers have been deployed to the location to provide reassurance and complete an investigation into the threats received.”
